MEDICAL CENTER OF LEWISVILLE AND

GREATER LEWISVILLE CARES  TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR PEOPLE AFFECTED BY CANCER ON LIVESTRONG DAY 2008   Lewisville, TX  On May 13, 2008, 3:30 to 7:30 pm, The Medical Center of Lewisville (MCL) and Greater Lewisville Cares (GLC) will join the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) to present a Cancer Survivorship Fair and raise awareness about cancer issues.        The event, to be held at The Medical Center of Lewisville, 500 West Main Street, 2nd Floor, in Lewisville, is one of 500 local LIVESTRONG Day events to be held across the country to engage communities with experiences that increase awareness and show support for cancer survivors and their loved ones. The mission for the event is to provide a comprehensive look at wellness, nutrition, and lifestyle as well as factors pertaining to living with cancer from early detection through end of life and other aspects of cancer affecting the whole family including caregiver and mental health support. Eighteen (18) local nonprofits and cancer-related resources will be participating, and speakers will be featured throughout the event, discussing topics including “Importance of a Survivorship Plan,” “Biopsy Options and Cancer,” “Optimizing Health and Wellness,” “The Caregiver Perspective” and conclude with a survivor story, “Finding Your Silver Lining.”  Carter BloodCare will be on site from 3-6 p.m. for anyone interested in donating blood; and the National Marrow Donor program will be taking cheek swabs of those interested in registering to be a marrow donor.  Reduced rate mammograms are available all day by appointment only by calling 972/420-1049; and $5 PSA screenings will also be available on site during the LIVESTRONG Day event at the Medical Center of Lewisville.      “Participating in LIVESTRONG Day is important to GLC because it offers an opportunity for us to share lifesaving information to the community on how to prevent cancer, be a cancer survivor and even save another's life through the bone marrow registry and blood drives,” said GLC President Stacey Campbell. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to support cancer survivors and encourage people in the Lewisville area to unite together to end the needless death and suffering from the disease that affects 1 in 3 people in the United States.  This statistic includes my husband who has been battling an incurable non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for over 8 years and is currently searching for a marrow donor.”      In year’s past, approximately 200 LAF delegates have advocated in Washington, D.C., to demand that our nation’s leaders invest in resources, treatment and services for people affected by cancer and to emphasize the importance of making cancer a national priority.  This year the foundation has decided to shift the focus from legislators and lobbyists to the American people in their local communities. We believe that by uniting people in the fight against cancer we will remind our decision-makers that their constituents care about cancer and demand change.  About the Lance Armstrong FoundationThe Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) unites people through programs and experiences to empower cancer survivors to live life on their own terms and to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. The LAF focuses on cancer prevention, access to screening and care, research and quality of life for cancer survivors. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF has raised more than $250 million for the fight against cancer. Join 60 million LIVESTRONG wristband wearers and help make cancer a national priority. Unite and fight cancer at LIVESTRONG.org.
